Why Your Client’s Hair Really Turned Pink (It Probably Wasn’t the Sunscreen)

Why Your Client’s Hair Really Turned Pink (It Probably Wasn’t the Sunscreen)

Let me tell you a quick story…

In my 25+ years of working with extension hair, I’ve seen just about everything — the good, the bad, and the slightly concerning shades of vacation pink that clients come home with.

You know exactly what I’m talking about.

A client goes on a beach trip, has the time of her life, comes back glowing…
and her extensions?
Pink. Peachy. Brassy. Just off.

And every single time, we said the same thing:

“Sunscreen did it.”
“You need to switch to a mineral sunscreen.”
“Make sure it’s hair-safe.”

We blamed EVERYTHING except the one thing we should’ve looked at from the start:

The quality of the hair.

The Truth Most Artists Don’t Know

Here’s what isn’t talked about enough in our industry:

Most extension hair goes through aggressive chemical treatments and is coated with heavy layers of silicone.

And at first?
Silicone makes the hair look shiny, smooth, and beautiful.

But here’s the problem…

When the silicone begins to wear off — especially after washing, heat, sweat, or ocean water — the hair becomes more porous.

And porous hair does what porous hair always does:

It grabs onto EVERYTHING.

✨ Sunscreen
✨ Oils
✨ Chlorine
✨ Saltwater
✨ Sweat
✨ Lotion
✨ And yes… even humidity

So maybe it wasn’t the sunscreen.
Maybe it wasn’t your client.
Maybe it wasn’t the beach day or the brand of lotion.

Maybe it was just bad hair.

Let’s Stop Blaming Clients

Every stylist I know has had that awkward moment:

Explaining to a client why their hair turned peach after Cabo…
while silently panicking because you know the conversation isn’t landing.

Here’s the truth:

If your extension hair is high-quality and processed correctly, your clients should be able to:

✔ Swim
✔ Sweat
✔ Work out
✔ Travel
✔ Be active
✔ Live their life
✔ Wear sunscreen
✔ Go to the beach

…without stressing about turning pink.

And that’s exactly why I created Isla Hand-Tied Hair.

Extensions shouldn’t hold your clients back from living a big, full, active life.
They should support it.
